They say you can’t step into the same river twice. The water has already moved on and so have you.
That’s the thing about life. Change isn’t an occasional visitor, it’s the river itself. And whether we’re ready or not, we are always learning to swim.
I’ve supported others who were navigating sudden change, those creating change, and those resisting it with all their strength. I’ve been that person through all of those seasons of change, Wherever you are, the truth is that change is constant. And when we understand how it works, we can learn not just to survive it but to thrive and grow because of it.
The Five Types of Change We Face
1. Change We Have No Control Over (The Uninvited Guest)
Life happens. Illness. Loss. Economic shifts. An unexpected crisis. The moment that demands an immediate decision and often reshapes our lives in unexpected ways. Yet, it’s often here we discover just how resilient we are.
2. Change We Intentionally Create (The Courageous Step)
The leap you choose. It can be starting a business, leaving a relationship, moving somewhere new. It’s thrilling and terrifying at the same time. It’s also very empowering.
3. Change We Resist (The Stubborn Anchor)
We stay where it’s safe, even when it’s unfulfilling. The river still flows, but we cling to the bank, afraid to let go. We hold on for dear life afraid of where the current can take us. Instead of an adventure that can light us up, it’s an anchor that holds us in place and yearning for more.
4. Change That Evolves Naturally (The Gentle Drift)
Small, almost invisible shifts: our interests, priorities, and relationships transforming over time. Eventually, they change who we are and we seek out a new chapter to write in our lives.
5. Midlife Change (The Confluence)
This is the point when several types of change converge at once. It often occurs in midlife and can include career pivots, kids leaving home, self-rediscovery and health changes. It’s not a crisis as it’s been coined. It’s an opportunity and a chance to realign your life with who you truly are and what matters most to you.
The Science Behind Change and Why It Gets Easier
Our brains are not fixed. They’re alive, responsive, and constantly evolving which is exactly why change is possible at any stage of life. Understanding what’s happening in your brain during change can transform fear into curiosity and resistance into momentum.
Neuroplasticity: Your Brain’s Superpower
Your brain rewires itself whenever you learn, grow, or adapt. This process, called neuroplasticity, is how we recover from injuries, form new habits, and change limiting beliefs. Each time you take a step toward change, even a small one, you’re strengthening new neural pathways, making future change feel more natural.
Think of it like carving a walking path through tall grass. The first trip can feel slow and awkward. But walk it daily, and soon it becomes the easiest way forward. You can retrain your brain with this approach.
The Comfort Zone Effect: Why Discomfort is a Growth Signal
The brain loves efficiency, which is why familiar routines feel so safe. But real growth happens when we step into what psychologists call the stretch zone. That is the space just beyond comfort but not so far that we panic. Novel experiences activate the hippocampus and release dopamine, the motivation chemical, which boosts both focus and memory. This is why trying something new often leaves you feeling more alive and engaged.
The Stress Response: Turning Fear Into Confidence
When something feels uncertain, the amygdala which is your brain’s alarm system goes on high alert. This is why new situations can feel physically uncomfortable. But here’s the good news: with repeated, safe exposure, your brain learns the new experience isn’t dangerous. Over time, your prefrontal cortex (the decision-making center) takes the lead, calming the amygdala’s overreaction. This process is called habituation, and it’s how anxiety turns into confidence.
Putting It All Together
- You try something new → the brain begins wiring a fresh pathway.
- You repeat the action → dopamine makes it easier and more rewarding.
- You feel less fear → confidence grows, and you’re ready for the next step.
This is why your first steps into change feel shaky but each step after becomes not only easier, it becomes energizing. Your brain is literally learning to thrive in the new environment you’ve created.
The Magic in New Beginnings
Every change is a doorway. Sometimes it looks like the door is closing but it’s often opening to something more beautiful than we could have imagined.
Think of spring after winter: what looked barren was actually a season of quiet preparation.
You can reframe endings as space-makers. The job loss? Space for work that lights you up. The relationship ending? Space to reconnect with yourself. The midlife restlessness? A sign your inner compass is pointing toward your next chapter.
Eight Ways to Embrace Change (or Make It Happen)
- Name It to Tame It – Write down the change and identify what’s in your control.
- Reframe the Story – Shift from “I have to” to “I choose to.”
- The 1% Change Rule – Start with one small daily step.
- Stretch Your Comfort Zone – Try something mildly uncomfortable once a week.
- Anchor in the Familiar – Keep a few comforting routines.
- Find Possibility People – Surround yourself with growth-minded support.
- Micro-Visualization – Picture yourself succeeding daily for two minutes.
- The 5-Second Rule (Mel Robbins) – Count down and act before hesitation takes over.
Finding Your Flow Again
Midlife changes, especially, can stir up the feeling that something is “off” and that maybe we’ve lost our way or fallen behind. But we’re not broken, and we’re not late. Often, we’re simply in a bend of the river, where the view is changing and the water moves differently.
When we learn to work with the flow instead of against it, the bend becomes less about uncertainty and more about curiosity. The future starts to feel less like something to brace for and more like something to explore.
If you’re ready to stop resisting the current and start steering with confidence, let’s talk. Your next chapter is waiting and you don’t have to navigate it alone.
